Make sure the sentences tell us the most important part of the chapter. Read Chapter 4 and write your caption sentence.
1/30/2014 Review the How to Make a Analogy Packet - How to Make a Analogy and make sure you followed the directions. Read the first three chapters of Twenty Three Balloons. We'll be discussing them in class.
1/17/2014 Be ready to present your "speech" to the class. Your grade will come from the Journeys and Destinations questions on pages 79 - 81, your written report/speech and your actual speech.
1/15/2014 Write the body of your presentation for class. Remember to use the second bullet on question 8 on page 81. How does your data support your point of view. Use the thinking maps you have developed and the notes you took to help you. The categories on your tree map should help you organize your writing.
1/14/2014 To organize your presentation information, answer the "bullet" questions on
pages 79 - 80 (6 & 7). Make sure to write in complete sentences. We will do question 8 in class tomorrow using your answers and the information you collected on your issue.
(8. Communicate your findings Pages 80 - 81 in Journeys and Destinations)
What is your purpose?
What is the issue? (Step 1 pg.75)
What is your point of view? (Step 2 pg. 76)
What data will you use to support your point of view? (Steps 3, 4, & 5 pgs.77-78)
How will you conclude your presentation? (Step 7 & 8 pgs 79 - 80)
As you know we have been on "researching". Our research has eight components (pages 75 - 81 in Journeys and Destinations).
1. Identify the issue
2. Read about your issue and identify points of view/arguments through information sources.
3. Form a set of questions that can be answered with specific data.
4. Gather evidence through interviews and other information sources. -
We did these first four steps before Winter Recess.
Now we are working on the last four steps.
5.Organize the data/information
6. Draw conclusions and make inferences
7. Determine implications and consequences
8. Communicate the results of your research.
We are planning on giving our class presentations next Tuesday 1/14/2014
Due- 12/19/2013
Keep researching your issue. Think about what you need to know fact-wise to support your writing. If you're trying to decide which kind of travel mode to take from here to the East coast (plane vs train), then you'll want to research passenger planes and trains. Think of the questions someone making the decision would ask... How long will the trip take? What makes the trip comfortable? How much does it cost? What are the advantages to plane... train travel?
Bring back some facts you can share with the class tomorrow.
On page 76 we talked about print sources, media sources and people sources. You can begin to look for print sources. Think about books, magazines, comic books, or pamphlets that might provide information for your issue. You DO NOT need to have them for tomorrow. This is just the beginning process.
12/5/2013 Look at pages 75 -- 81 in your Journeys and destinations book. In the margin, jot down questions you have about what each number is asking you to do and mark words you don't know. DO NOT begin your research or start to write on these pages.
The only thing you will write for tomorrow (aside from your questions :-) is the answer to the very first bullet - What is the issue or problem? For example, "Kids get to school in many different ways. Is a bicycle or a skate board a better choice?". State the issue or problem first and then your research question.
11/25/2013 Think of a topic for each of the research questions.
Which Would Win
Which is Best
What is Healthier
Which is Safer
11/22/2013 - Read the Who Would Win book you took home. Tomorrow we will discuss the "structure" of the books.

Due 11/6/2013 - Use the Tree Map we did in class to complete a Flee Map for your letter to a Veteran. Your map should have at least two major categories and two or more elaborations (details) for each category. You also a will need a two or three sentence closing for your letter. We will write the actual letter in class tomorrow. Be sure and bring your plan.
11/5/2013 - Finish reading through Chapter 9 in The Prince and the Pauper .
Friday 11/01/2013 - We are reading The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain and comparing the story with The Whipping Boy. Next week we will be choosing topic question for our research project.

Remember There is a place (it has the word "here" it), Their means ownership and They're is actually two words, "They are".
